|
|
In this day and age, wearing hair extensions has become second nature to many women , particularly of African descent. While I am not keen on getting into and argument about the reasons people wear them, I can authoritatively say that, most women wear hair extensions for the sake of manageability.
The hair extensions industry is a multi billion one and growing. What was once the preserve of celebrities has now become accessible to many women.
A growing trend has been the recent development in the use of virgin human hair extensions. Mostly referred to "Remy hair" or "Brazilian hair", such extensions are obtained from a donor and not subjected to any chemical treatment, hence the tag "virgin". There is no denying that such extensions are in a league of their own, and with the hefty price tag, why shouldn't they be. However, a lot of women are left wondering how to care for their extensions, to keep it looking fresh.
The first issue to be addressed, is that such hair extensions should be cared for as you would care for your natural hair. With hair extensions that have a life span of more than a year, you should be prepared to "protect your investment" by washing and conditioning your extensions regularly. Moisture, is key to the long term survival of your extensions.
I normally suggest washing and deep conditioning your extensions every other week, using products made specifically for Caucasian hair. In respect to the latter, I use conditioners made for dry and damaged hair, as they have a high moisture content which is a necessity for your hair extensions.
Before you install your extensions, always ensure that you wash and condition it first. Any fault with the hair should be noticed at this stage.
When installing, advise your hairdresser not to cut the weft of the hair extensions., This preserves the life span of the hair and minimizes shedding. It is safe and advised to wash the hair extensions while on, at least once every other week.
Always ensure that you brush your hair extensions out properly before washing.
Using luke warm water, apply our shampoo in a down ward motion.
Rinse out properly and apply your conditioner, with the aid of a wide tooth comb, also in a downward motion.
Leave to sit under a plastic cap for at least 30 minutes, comb and rinse out properly.
Towel dry for 10 minutes, and comb out again.
Apply a bit of hair serum to your extensions. Always avoid applying oil based hair products or products made for afro hair. This will weigh the hair down as the products are too concentrated for the texture of most human hair extensions on the market.
From this point on, you can leave it to air dry/blow-dry/roller set. Always ensure you brush out your extensions properly, and you are on your way to a fab hair day!!!
